LeadingWe shall not cease from exploration Thursday, November 5, 1998
Yesterday we shipped our beta! Internet Explorer 5 beta, that is. Of course, the actual browser was signed off on some days ago; it takes quite a while to arrange the release-to-web process. But what I've been working on is the Samples area of the Internet SDK, which is produced by part of our team in conjunction with Sitebuilder and the documentation team. And that wasn't finished until just before we posted. I'd thought on Tuesday that everything was taken care of, but we found a few things that had to be dealt with on Wednesday. I said to my surrogate manager that it was rather like being nibbled to death by ducks, an old expression that I don't think he'd heard before. I was really close to tears of frustration a few times! We were still working late Wednesday afternoon, while the team celebration was going on in the atrium of our building. I did manage to grab a few taquitos for myself. I did make it to the Century Ballroom Wednesday night, which I really needed. I hadn't done any dancing in six days! There weren't that many follows there, so I got asked to dance rather a lot, which was gratifying. I was amused when talking to "Up and" Adam. He hadn't heard one word about the IE5 release, which does put things in perspective. But he's not really a part of the software world; the company he works for is more into electronics.
I had it easier today at work. The fatigue factor is still there for everyone. I got some feedback on various items; some will get fixed, some won't. About a half an hour before I would have been leaving, a program manager from the browser side of our team came by my office. Had someone asked me about making a change to a page on our internal website? (Another one of my duties, but I've been dodging it during ship mode.) No, no one had mentioned it. I knew it would be a lot more complicated than he thought! So he and I dove in to the database-driven web page that lists all the variety of daily builds that we make available. I didn't create this page, and I'd never looked at it before, and I'm not familiar with ASP pages. But we sorted it out and accomplished what we needed to get done.
Tonight I took my first dance class as a lead! I've been inspired by Ann and Carla, two dance buddies that have learned to lead. It doubles our chances of getting a partner! I was slightly apprehensive beforehand, but Chris and Jen break things down to be so simple, that I didn't really have any trouble. One woman asked if we could just do the footwork, that is, would I mind not putting my arm around her? At first I thought she had a problem with a female lead, but then I realized she'd come in a few minutes late, and was trying to get caught up. I've danced several times lately with Hugo, an older Oriental man. He either dances East Coast Swing with me, or leads me through West Coast Swing, which I do not know. Tonight he was at the Russian Center, with an Oriental woman and two younger men. When we were dancing I asked him, "Who are your friends?" "That's my wife," he said. So I got him to introduce me to her after the dance was done, though I don't think she speaks that much English. It looked to me as if he was teaching her to dance, which I don't think is necessarily a great idea! It's like taking driving lessons from your husband. I left the dance at a relatively early time, even leaving several favored partners of mine undanced with! But my leg was slightly sore, and there are dance things tomorrow that I want to do. I was surprised to not see Wally when I turned on "Don't Quote Me on This". It's the first time I've managed to see it in weeks, and the host wasn't there! I missed the first few minutes, so I didn't get the explanation of where he is.
