One year ago: That Rarest Gift

I was at several meetings today, at work. I think it's surprising that many of the folks I worked with on the assignment I had two years ago are still working on that team now. They've been meeting with us about a joint project that is going forward. There are a thousands of people at Microsoft, so the odds aren't in favor of working with the same people over and over. Not many stay on the same team for a really long time. But because of the way the various web teams have merged and split over the past few years, I'm working now with folks I worked with before, in ways I never expected to happen.

Maybe I'll see Jack at Vanguard (a monthly science fiction party I go to) tomorrow night, maybe not. He has his daughters with him this weekend. I laughed when he wrote me this: "Where are you going to be tomorrow afternoon? Don't hang around the house just because I am asking! But let me know." I asked what he had in mind! But what he meant was that depending on when he got home with his girls, he might be able to pick me up and take me to Vanguard. But I'd already said I'd give my buddy Bluejack a ride, and Jack wouldn't know until the last minute, so we left it that I'll see him there if he can make it.

The Bill Elliot Swing Orchestra (BESO) was playing at the Century Ballroom tonight. I've heard them before, and loved them! There was a good crowd, but it wasn't jam-packed, perhaps because the band is booked for Saturday night also.

I danced with Sean Finlay, who was a new partner for me, and very good! He knew my name from the swing-seattle-chat mailing list, and has looked at this site before, I think. I asked him where he'd been the last few months, since I'd never run into him before, but other folks knew him. He said he'd been working too hard to do much dancing lately. Shockingly twisted priorities, I think!

I was so happy to see all my dance buddies, after a break of a week and a half. It's nice to be missed! Earl Ryan teased me by saying that Wednesday, when I'd stayed at home, had been a great night, with the whole crowd there. Ah, well, I needed the rest that night.

It was Benjamin's birthday, so they had a birthday jam circle for him at the second intermission. He's now an old man of twenty four years, the pup! I was really pleased that he pulled me from the circle and danced with me first. We've been dance classmates for a long time, but I don't know if I'd have dared to jump out and grab him on my own. He and I were paired in a dance contest in October that was truly a peak experience!
