Don't Quote Me
Thursday, January 7, 1999 I talked to my brother yesterday. He'd left a couple of messages while I was out of town, and I was going to call him back, but he called again. He wanted to ask me where there were good horticulture programs at the local colleges. I did study horticulture back in Virginia, but I haven't done any gardening around here, so I couldn't help him much. He does seem to be doing ok overall, which is good to know. I went dancing last night at the Century Ballroom, after not dancing since New Year's Eve! I needed the break to recover after dance camp. I can see though, that since I'm not doing dance class on Wednesdays for the next six weeks or so, it will be more difficult to drag myself out of the house for the dance that starts at nine thirty in the evening. I had a good time, of course, and caught up with some buddies that I hadn't seen since before the holiday.
Tonight was the first class in the current Hep-cat productions series of intermediate Lindy Hop. It's been a year since they started up at the Russian Center, and Jen and Chris have done very well. They both make a living from teaching, DJ'ing, and promoting, and that's pretty good, I think. I was pleased by the choices they made in what to teach tonight; there were various steps that absolutely depended on correct leading by the man. Good to get these folks (many are just starting out, though it's an intermediate class) thinking about these subtle points of pressure and weight change that are really what partner dancing is all about. My only worry -- I don't want to get too much in the habit of giving my partners feedback about what they didn't do in the best way, and forget about improving my own dancing skills! Plus I don't think I'd be too popular as a partner, if I were constantly micromanaging what the guy is doing. One guy did make a point of thanking me, since I do let them know what is working well, not just what they are not doing right. I decided not to stay for the dance. I've been too tired lately, and I wanted to see if going to sleep a bit earlier will help me keep my energy level up in the late afternoon. So I had time to stop at the grocery store on the way home and buy a bunch of food. I really should go through my kitchen cupboard and get rid of all the stuff that I know I'm never going to eat. There's really no point in buying such things. I was able to watch Wally Glenn's TV show, Don't Quote Me on That, for the first time in quite a while. Wally is catching up on his writing, with good pieces about the Solstice Feast that I stayed home from, and performing Pyro Boy on New Year's Eve. Doing the Comedy Competition, and all the bad stuff that's happening in his life lately (car break-ins, job ending, needing to move), have really taken a chunk out of his time and energy the past few months. I'm glad he's back to writing more regularly.
