Day of Rest

It is already possible to imagine a society in which the majority of the population, that is to say, its laborers, will have almost as much leisure as in earlier times was enjoyed by the aristocracy. When one recalls how aristocracies in the past actually behaved, the prospect is not cheerful.

Don't miss my dancing adventures on Friday, and a revenge movie on Saturday. (For the benefit of those people who only read the most recent entry.)

* * * * * * * *

Jack and I spent a quiet Sunday at his house. He did laundry and worked on some computer stuff; I lazed around, wrote, and read. Since he needed to get things done, I didn't remind him of my wish to go see Shakespeare in Love, instead saving that pleasure for another day. I'm sure I've got a star in my crown in heaven for making the sacrifice, and I went to the movie he wanted to see yesterday, to boot!

While we were driving south to Olympia, Jack entertained me by telling stories of high school escapades. I told him I'm glad we didn't know each other then; we wouldn't have gotten along, I think! He was kind of a wild kid, and my group was the oh-so-proper clique that produced the literary magazine. But the stories are funny now, at this distance.

A---, Jack's daughter, went to sleep almost immediately after we picked her up from her mother's house. Jack started talking about various trips he is planning, and trips he is just dreaming about. For the first time, when he talked about a trip to Southern California for his daughters and himself, later this spring, he asked if I'd like to go along, which pleased me very much. And he asked if I'd come over, some evening this week. What a sweetie! He's learned that I really do like to be invited to join in things. Now, how the girls will feel about me joining in on a trip that might last a week, I don't know. But we get along well when we're together.
