That is the thankless position of the father in the family -- the provider for all, and the enemy of all.

Jack and I drove down to Olympia last night, to pick up his older daughter A----. Problem: A--- wasn't at her mother's house when we arrived. We were a bit earlier than she'd have reason to expect us, so we decided to go to the mall where she supposedly was and look for her.

The first mall (visited by mistake) was very strange. It was almost empty of operating stores, and seemed to be on its last legs. After a bit Jack realized that A--- must be at the other mall, at the other end of town, so off we drove.

I enjoyed the window shopping we did there, and the snack (a humbao and an A&W rootbeer float). We scanned the crowds. Every young girl seemed to resemble A---, ponytail, hooded sweatshirt, and all.

We drove around the actual downtown of Olympia, stopped at a used bookstore and a pawn shop, and got Jack some of his favorite coffee from the local-based roaster that he likes. By this time, it was almost seven o'clock, and A--- was still not back at her mom's place!

Our next stop was at Jack's sister's place. I first met her Thanksgiving. She and her son have just moved into a cute little house. Jack and she talked about what to do about the missing teenager, while Thunderball played in the background.

When we got back to the trailer park where Jack's ex-wife lives, his younger daughter H---- said that A---- had just called from a nearby service station. She hopped in the car and rode with us.

It was a tough scene when we found A----. Jack was very angry that she hadn't been home at a reasonable hour to be picked up, and that she hadn't contacted him or her mother. The ride home was also not fun. A--- was sulky and resentful, and Jack was frustrated and angry.

Jack apologized for a boring [!] evening, but I told him not to worry about it. You have to take the rough with the smooth if someone is a part of your life.

I had a good time at the Washington Dance club tonight! Hyper Dan was back in the house, after a two-week Mexican vacation, and there were enough other leads there that I danced for most of the evening. My legs are actually sore! If it weren't so late, I'd soak myself in a hot bath.
