Never tire yourself more than necessary, even if you have to found a culture on the fatigue of your bones.
-- Antonin Artaud

I'm feeling more human now. I was so tired during the day today, both physically (I was out dancing last night) and mentally (from the IE5 launch) that when I got home, I actually stood on the streetcorner for about a minute, trying to decide if I should go to the store for food, or go take a bath and a nap. I opted for the latter, and I was actually hungry! So you see I really wanted that rest. That's why my dinner tonight consisted of saltines. That sounds sadder than it is, since I do have food in the cupboards, just not any food that I feel like eating.

The day was stressful, although I didn't actually do a lot. We were mostly testing the website, looking for our files to show up on the various servers around the world. This isn't a process that we can make go any faster, and all the sites were getting slammed from people trying to download Internet Explorer.

I did have the chance today to help our team's admin to get her first taste of HTML. I was tempted to just do it for her, but she really should know the basics if she is going to work on our team. Her machine wasn't configured correctly for editing the HTML file-type, so I had to hunt around to find the dialog to fix that up. I had a template that she could use to input her information, and it was a simple page. It was actually a good way for her to get started!

I was reminded of when I worked as a textprep lead and unofficial tech support on the team for a gardening CD-ROM, a few years ago. The editors were so untechnical! But they were very nice ladies, so I didn't mind at all helping them sort out where they should be saving their files, or making little macro buttons in Word to make their life easier. I hope someone will be doing as much for me, when I'm having trouble with some new tech stuff twentyfive years from now.

I'm glad Internet Explorer 5 is now released. I'll be upgrading at home in the next few days. I think I'll use a DHTML behavior on my photos page, and look for places to use them on the rest of this site. The Photos page could benefit from a collapsing list, and the one I use on the team website I take care of is much easier to maintain than any solution that just uses script. The good side: no script errors from browsers that don't support the feature. The bad side: older browsers will see the list as expanded, which is how they see it now.

So I feel much better now. I had a great soak in the tub, an hour-and-a-half long nap, and watched Frasier, so now I'm quite content.
