SurpriseIt is always safe to learn, even from our enemies; seldom safe to venture to instruct, even our friends. Tuesday, April 6, 1999
I got some shocking news at work today. Both developers that work on our website are moving on in the next few weeeks! We've lost our tester, we've lost our manager, we are losing these two guys who are so great. I'm really bummed! I'm also annoyed that I wasn't informed about this, though there wasn't anything that I could have done about it. But this whole thing is really distressing, and not just because I'm change-averse. I need to talk to my real manager about this, but she's out this week.
I was rather tired when I got home from work, so I took one of those disorienting late-afternoon naps. I slept for an hour and a half. When I woke up at six thirty, it took me fully five minutes to figure out whether it was morning or night! When I finally figured out that it was still Tuesday, I proceeded to go back to sleep for another half hour. This was really a risky move, sleeping with hard contact lenses in my eyes, but I didn't injure myself. I woke up in time to get dressed and go to the first session of the class I'm taking now with the Savoy Swing Club. I'd been concerned about keeping up, so much so that I'd asked the instructors in my previous class if they felt I'd be up to it. (The class descriptions assume you've taken all your instruction with them: "Prerequisites: Competence with ALL the material in the Essentials series.") I needn't have worried. The moves we covered were familiar to me, except for one new variation. I think that what I'll learn is how to connect to a series of inexperienced leads who have developed an amazing collection of odd habits! There are some very good dancers in class, though, and the teachers are good. We'll see how it goes. I decided not to go to the Washington Dance Club, but to go home instead. Now all I need to do is actually get to sleep early!
I would love to go to Minneapolis, just to visit this store: the Ax-man! The site looks funky, and they only sell online in wholesale quantities, but I think it might be better than Boeing Surplus. I might order from them when I get toys for next year's Potlatch, though the quantities may be too large for our small literary convention, even if I give one of something to each member. Adapters/Transformers, Apothecary Jars, Baby Baby Grand Pianos, Barbeque/Lawn Mower Covers, Bayonet Lamp Sockets, Bendable Bracelets/Ponytail Holders,... neat! |
