ImagineThe great instrument of moral good is the imagination. Wednesday, April 21, 1999
I've been enjoying Imagine Radio for the past few days. Rather than accept any of their presets, I worked my way through the entire list of artists, weighting them the way I wanted to hear them. Example: Cab Calloway and Count Basie get played very often, more obscure bands that I want to sample get played less often, most categories of music don't get played at all. This is great for those with a fast connection; probably not so hot through a modem. You can sample mine if you like! or see my playlist. But the real fun is doing your own!
I've been doing well on my program of actually doing a few tasks around the house every day. Sunday and Monday I did laundry, and today I actually took the trash out! That means recycling and garbage both! From the kitchen and my bedroom! I was very proud. I also formatted and posted a new Cacophony event report! They had a good time last week on tax day, befuddling people outside the post office with their Irrelevant Tax Protest against egg salad sandwiches threatening the position of tuna salad sandwiches as a popular lunch item. I wish now that I'd been there.
I think one of the disturbing things to me about the Colorado massacre is that it might lead to kids that are already not well accepted with the "popular" crowd -- see Shellyness on this -- being also viewed as life-threatening! The varying descriptions of the "Trenchcoat Mafia" by current and former students are rather chilling. From the Colorado State University paper: "They're just weird. They were outcasts." From the Colorado Springs Gazette (link may disappear soon): "Several athletes conceded they have power, popularity and a knack for talking their way out of trouble. They also picked on the Trench Coats, calling them 'inbreeds,' pushing them around, daring them to retaliate." (thanks to The Obscure Store and Reading Room for the links.) I usually don't write much about current events here. I keep myself informed via the local NPR station, but I don't regularly read the paper or watch TV news. I do have opinions and thoughts, but I'm usually reluctant to discuss them. I'm far more likely to tell you emotional stuff than political stuff! I think that's because I do take these things seriously, but I don't like to be reminded that people I value and think highly of may have very different opinions than mine. Debating isn't fun or easy for me.
I had a good time dancing tonight at the Century Ballroom. Benjamin passed me a card about some classes he'll be teaching, but I think I'll have to wait for the next session, since the film festival starts in a few weeks. He said that drop-ins would be ok, though, so maybe I'll get to sample. I do want to support a buddy! I danced with a guy that I think I've danced with before. I had extreme difficulty in following him! He wasn't with the music, and his lead wasn't clear to me, so I couldn't always pick up on whatever internal rhythm was guiding his dancing instead of the beat. He writhed and wriggled about, just like an eel! Matteo and I danced together, and it was great! The workshops I've been doing lately made it easier to follow him, and he complimented me several times (and asked for several dances in a row!). He mixes up a lot of balboa, ballroom, and his own improvisations with the lindy he does. He's been in San Francisco, which is why I hadn't seen him around for several months. |
