Electronic aids, particularly domestic computers, will help the inner migration, the opting out of reality. Reality is no longer going to be the stuff out there, but the stuff inside your head. It's going to be commercial and nasty at the same time.

One year ago: Not Hiding

I didn't go dancing tonight. When it would have been time to get ready to go, I felt tired and a bit queasy. A wave of malaise swept over me. So I stayed home instead -- a rare occurence, not to go to the Century Ballroom when I don't have something else going on.

I took a big step today at work. I updated my operating system! But I definitely need a bigger hard drive, or I need another drive installed. Two gigs just isn't what it used to be. This is in aid of getting back up to speed on the new Microsoft stuff, instead of being head down in shipping a product. First the OS (upgraded to Win98); next the new version of Office. Next I'll figure out how the server extensions for Office can help people use and discuss the specs we will be creating.

The mystery correspondent that I was talking about yesterday did send another message to me. For some reason, he also BCC'd the list! Add to that the all-caps formatting and the extremely unlikely misspellings and other errors, and I think we can classify him as a troll. He was the instigator of a good discussion on the list, though, bringing some folks that rarely post out of the woodwork. People were talking about the whole "clique" phenomenon in a calm, considered way, and didn't respond too much when the troll was yanking their chains.

I got a good start at next month'd design, using fonts from DINC (or is it girlswhowearglasses.com ?). I'd like to have the bits and pieces all lined up, ready to go for this weekend, and I think I'll be able to do that.

I've gotten some very kind messages in the past few days. Thanks, you guys!
