Bento

So one night I started deliberately thinking of rhinoceroses--how many kinds of white rhinoceros could I imagine? A real white rhino, out standing in its veldt. A stone rhino. A rhino carved from Ivory soap. An origami rhino. (The hamsters' revolutions slowed.) A snowrhino. A white picket rhino. A plastic rhino tub toy. The label on a bottle of White Rhino Vodka. Fluffy rhino bunny-slipperzzzz....

One year ago: Radio-Controlled

I went to pick up my full-series pass for this year's film festival this afternoon. I'm feeling pretty smug right now. I'm pleased with myself for having had the forethought to actually send the money in early! They sent back vouchers in January, and I was organized enough to put them in a kitchen drawer, and to remember that I'd done so! Last year I'd had to wait until the box office was open to the public, with the possibility of being shut out. But my efficiency this year meant that all I had to do today was hand over the vouchers, sign the secrecy oath several times for the Secret Festival pass, have a polaroid photo taken, then wait for the card to be laminated with my picture. If I'd brought a picture of my own I would have been done even quicker!

The full schedule won't be public until tomorrow, so I still have no idea what movies I'll be seeing. I'll probably leave most of the choices up to my buddy A---, anyway.

I walked off with Secret pass and Full-series pass in hand. It was just a bit after four o'clock, and the day had turned nice and sunny, So I walked down Broadway in hopes of seeing a movie, by way of a Festival warm-up. But the timing was off, and the shows had already started by the time I got to Broadway Market. Since I'd resisted buying any hair doodads at the dollar store and didn't stop at the bookstore either, the only money I spent was for two slices of pizza at the pizzeria up the street from my house.

I felt so drowsy in the early evening that I decided not to go dancing. I regret that now, especially since I'll be doing very little dance during the festival. But I'll be out tomorrow, Wednesday, and maybe Thursday.

Jack sent me mail from his new work address, and kept me posted on how things are going for him up in Bellingham, which was very thoughtful of him. I now know his work phone number with voice mail, and his cell phone also works, so I don't feel so cut off. Imagine, no web access for him until the Corporate headquarters approves! Shades of 1995!

Portland fans David Levine and Kate Yule have a web page! Why has this been kept from me? I would certainly have linked there when I've mentioned them before, like at Vickie Jean's Bunnyfest, or the most recent Potlatch.

My first notice of the site was via a message on an orycon-related mailing list. David had been profiled in the Portland Sunday paper as a geek that lifts weights. He's posted a scanned version of the article (413K gif).

I'm glad that Kate and David have posted online versions of Bento, the zine they've been putting out for ten [ ! ] years. I think it's worth reading even for non-fans, though the html version can't have the cuteness of the little printed zine, sized so that a sheet of 8.5 x 11 paper holds four pages.
