Stepping on Toes

One of the effects of a safe and civilised life is an immense oversensitiveness which makes all the primary emotions somewhat disgusting. Generosity is as painful as meanness, gratitude as hateful as ingratitude.

I've called this entry "Stepping on Toes," but I'm not referring to the dancing I did tonight.

When I got home from work today, I organized things for the convention I'm going to tomorrow, and actually washed some lingerie that's been in a pile for too long! Then I walked down to the Russian Center.

Chris Chapman eats a bagel, July 5, 1998 (Click for larger version) Cat Daddy Chris's real birthday is tomorrow, but like Pamie, he's extended the festivities for the week beforehand. It's been a while since I was dancing at the Russian Center, and even longer since I was enrolled in class with Hep Cat Productions. Hep Jen and Chris won't be around for the next session -- they are going to the Herrang Swing camp in Sweden! -- but I might sign up with the guest instructors they are going to have, who are very good.

In honor of the occasion, I stopped at the grocery store on the way and bought a bunch of pale orange mini-carnations as a token gift for Chris. The Capitol Hill neighborhood looked gorgeous as I walked through the quiet, tree-lined streets; roses and irises are at their peak, and rhododendrons are just past theirs.

The hall was only comfortably crowded when I got there. I didn't know that they are doing some demolition and repairs! Half of the lobby was behind clear plastic, with lath and plaster everywhere. I was looking for some Microsoft interns who had been talking about dancing tonight, but I'd neglected to find out what they looked like. I asked several groups of young folks, not familiar faces to me, but none of them were the interns in question. But I danced with some of those beginners anyway.

I had a blast dancing, as it got warmer and more crowded. But when Chris's birthday jam happened, I (and many others) didn't get a chance to get in the circle! I'm just not bold enough, and the jam only lasted for one song.

Chris is a great guy! He's now twenty five years old, which is beyond being a young kid. I like his teaching style, and I admire the enterprising spirit that led Jen and him to start their teaching and promoting business together.

Someone took down a website that was in my bookmarks, so I wrote to zir and expressed my regret, and my wish that other, related websites were also still around. Ouch! It turned out that the person didn't want anything further to do with the subject of the site. I'd had no idea things were as bad as that.

Then, in another area of my life, I tried to get some private discussion going about a possible future project, and one of the folks involved reacted by wanting to end the whole thing! I'd never intended to criticize zir! I must have been under a bad star tonight in the personal relations area.
