By common consent of all the nations and all the ages the most valuable thing in this world is the homage of men, whether deserved or undeserved. |

One year ago: Cacophony Meeting
Two years ago: Image-Junkies
I want to get back in real-time mode here!
Monday I came home from work and lay down upon my bed, closing my eyes for a mere moment -- or so I thought! So I was surprised when I looked at the clock and it was almost nine! I guess I needed the sleep. That was really too late to go out dancing as I'd wished to do, so I wrote instead.

Tuesday I'd planned on working for a few hours at home, continuing the de-cluttering process I'd gotten started on Sunday, before going to a Cacophony Meeting. But long-awaited email arrived: a bunch of program managers, formerly on separate teams, were all joining our team and reporting to our group lead PM. We'd known about this for a few weeks, but yesterday it became official. Since our leader was in the office for a few days between business trips, he decided to have an informal gathering to have us all get to know each other and share some snacks. I figured, since I could be there, I really ought to stay later than I usually do and participate. I could go directly from the party to the meeting.
So we had chicken wings, crudités, chimichangas, and beverages, and played a trivia game where one tried to figure out which team member had previously worked on "The Price is Right," or other odd fact. No one guessed my trivia item, since I didn't mention Cacophony or lindy hop. I decided to name my two favorite authors, P.G. Wodehouse and Georgette Heyer. I did make an effort to talk to folks I didn't already know, so I think I did my duty.
Even at seven o'clock, it was still backed up on the highway I needed to take! Traffic is really getting noticeably worse around here. I drove to the U-district and met up wit my cacophony buddies, whom I haven't seen in a while. I'd been taking a class on Tuesday nights, then the film festival... It turns out that the only firm plan for the Solstice parade this year isn't one I want to join in on (too mean!) so I'll definitely be watching the parade this year.
Nick and I talked a bit to the others about how Jayson is really ready to stop handling the cacophony newsletter. But how to change the direction of the group? We've really been lame and slackers lately. Jayson has a baby almost a year old, I'm busy with dancing and Jack, and we are a small enough group that a decrease in activity by just a few folks can really put the hurt on us.

So today I rebooted my test machine about a zillion times. It had a failed uninstall of a recent build of our product, and now all it will do is GPF as soon as I boot! The strike team that's supposed to help us through these traumas is now composed of all new people (to that team), I discovered to my horror, so they were only a bit more clued in than I was!
Jack confirmed that he is going to come down and stay with me this weekend. This will be great, except that I need to get things a bit more comfortable for two. So I bought a few extra groceries and started sorting throught the books that have stacked themselves in front of the overflowing bookcases in my bedroom. I may not be able to get everything done by Friday, but I'll make a good stab at it. I'm putting each book, as I pick it up, into the "keep" sack or the "get rid of" sack. I'd use boxes, but I don't have any! So I'm using a bunch of plastic bags instead. I also have a lot of paper clutter all over the kitchen counters -- no room for any food there! and the bathroom needs redding up. I still have tomorrow evening to work, also.
Funny, I didn't mind Jack seeing the place like this when he'd only be here an hour or so, but if he's going to spend significant time here, I want it to be cleaner and more organized. Things deteriorated quite a bit during the film festival, too, and I haven't had a chance to get back up to speed yet. The laundry is a problem area, too!

I just got back from the Century Ballroom. It was Hep Jen's birthday, though I didn't get a chance to dance with her in her birthday dance, and Earl Ryan's birthday was yesterday. I did get to partner him, leading off his birthday jam. What fun! It was a warm night, and fairly crowded. Jen really is beloved! I don't know a person that has a bad word to say about her. She's a good teacher, very funny, and a grand dancer. Earl's one of my personal faves, and also very widely popular. Good folks! I was wise, and sat out a good number of dances. It was hot!
Hey, I wonder how this journal would read if Smurfette were writing it?
