I had such a good time at the Savoy Swing Club's Friday Night Practice tonight! Mike Wendt had his video camera there, so I got my buddy Brian to dance with me in front of it for a dance. If I get a VHS tape to Mike, he'll take care of duping. Mike also came through when the person scheduled to teach a mini-lesson didn't show. He taught some variations on the corridor, a move where the couple, side by side, turns in and out while moving forward. (Clear as mud, I know!) The most unusual thing he taught was something he tried on me recently. Everyone dances this variation where you are right-hand to right-hand with your partner, and you tap each other on the back or shoulder as you turn in and out and go around. This step is really over-danced; people do it too much (in my opinion). But Mike figured out a way to switch hands and directions midstream, which is so unexpected (but leadable) that it made me laugh out loud. Fun! There was an older woman sitting on the side of the room, but not dancing. She said she was just there to watch, and complimented my dancing, which was gratifying. I guess she had some friends there, and came along to watch them, or because they were going somewhere else later. FNP isn't the place to start from scratch in lindy hop, but if you have learned the basics you can dance there. (By older, I mean older than me, so she might have been in her fifties.)
I saw a cool pallette website at work, but when I wanted it at home I couldn't remember the URL! But diary-l and the Seattle Webgrrls came through, and found me http://www.paletteman.com/. It's a fun toy to play with! |
