Bedding Frenzy

The cool kindliness of sheets, that soon
Smooth away trouble; and the rough male kiss
Of blankets.

I experienced a bedding frenzy today!

Jack will probably be visiting me this weekend, and I want to get the sleeping situation improved by then. The last time he was here, I was on a mattress on the floor! I currently have a twin bed, one we got from some cousins. The bedframe and matching dresser are nice wood, and there's a matching frame that's over at my sister's house. But I need something bigger! Maybe we can find a good home for this entire set.

I drove over to Bed, Bath and Beyond, at Redmond Town Center. There was a bedframe I'd seen and liked at the downtown store, simple "Shaker" style. It was less expensive than some beds I've seen, because it was in the "put it together yourself" section. But they didn't have it at this store! So I contented myself with a scrub thing on a long handle -- no more cleaning the tub on my knees.

I walked out and was almost at the car, when I realized that I could go ahead and get sheets and stuff. I knew that I'll be getting a queen-size bed. So I went back in, got a cart, and started perusing the bed linens.

B, B, and B has the Costco-trance effect; they know how to select and arrange the merchandise to make impulse buying irresistable! I almost succumbed to a bold red and green paisley comforter, with green velvet dust ruffle and shams. It was on sale! And I did admire the pattern. But after I had them in the cart, I felt that they would be limiting. I'd need to have dark red or green sheets, which I didn't really want. So back they went. I'm glad I experienced this buyer's remorse before I actually bought the stuff.

I changed mode entirely, and went for high thread-count, all cotton, white, beige, and tan. I mixed the woven textures -- squggles, stripes, dots. Bed skirt, duvet cover, sheets, pillowcases. I was psyched! I even went for two "Euro" style pillows just for looks. Those Europeans -- they really know how to live.

I toured through Pier 1, and through Z Galerie, both also at Redmond Town Center, to see what sorts of beds they had. Pier 1 only had headboards. Z Galerie had quite a number of beds, varying quite a bit in price. There were a few that I thought were possibilities. The whole store appeals to me -- simple eclecticism, lots of space, great fabrics, and candles all over.

I still wanted to get the bedframe taken care of, and they'd told me that the downtown store was open until nine, so I drove downtown. There was backed-up traffic even at seven o'clock! Around and around the Belltown neighborhood (worry-making because I was low on gas). I knew what I wanted to see (and I'd just inspected all the applicable departments at the Redmond store) so I asked a sales clerk if they had the queen-size shaker bed in stock, since it wasn't on display. They did have it, back in the back. The stock guy was directed to bring it out. I waited several minutes. I was amused when he brought me back a small, black and white picture, cut off the box! But I decided to go for it, anyway.

This is typical for me. I think about something for quite a while, investigate, look, then something tips me over to buying mode and I go get it, right that day! It was the same when I bought my digital camera, and in earlier years when I bought my TV and home theater stuff.

I was pleased that the sales clerk decided to pretend I had a coupon, and knock something off the price. I don't know exactly why! I can't get the bed home until Saturday, when I hope Jack can fit the two boxes in his truck.
