Window Shopping

My new bed feels great! It was very comfortable. I slept late, then got up and checked email, letting Jack sleep even later. He needed it, after all our schlepping and rearranging efforts yesterday. When he did wake up, he couldn't confirm my opinion of the bed, since his back was hurting a bit: too much bending and lifting the day before. We went over to my sister's house to pick up Jack's daughter H----. She was having such a good time playing a castle exploration game on the PC, and my nephews were having such a good time hanging over her shoulders, that we sat at the dining room table and talked with my brother-in-law for a while, rather than leaving immediately. Jack had talked previously about going to see the Impressionist art show at the Seattle Art Museum, and this weekend had seemed to me like a good time to see it, but because we hadn't gotten ourselves going early enough, there was quite a line when we got downtown and drove past. Jack hates lines! (But I don't know anyone who likes them, you know.) So we kept driving, down to Pioneer Square, which was fine with me. I swear I wasn't pushing the art show for myself, though I'd be glad to see it; I'll have other chances, but it might not be so easy for Jack to get down here and there aren't that many weekends left in the month.
We had lunch at the New Orleans. I had an oyster loaf poorboy sandwich, very good with panfried oysters in a sub roll, with creole mayonnaise. We discussed the jazz musicians whose portraits were all over the walls. I'd never been to this place before, though I'd passed it many times. They have live music in the evenings, but there's no room for dancing. The food was very tasty, especially the red beans and rice. From there, we walked down First Avenue, doing some window shopping on the way at a gallery of classic animation cels, and the Paper Cat rubber stamp store. I'd like to get back into rubber stamping -- straightening and decluttering the rest of my apartment would let me renew that pursuit. Piles of books and stuff are in the way now. Speaking of books, we next went to Elliot Bay Books. Jack bought the first two Harry Potter books for H----; she'd read the first chapters of the first volume last night at my sister's house, and found them very funny. I'm so glad I suggested this reading aloud thing; it's a good way for folks of any age to spend quality time together.
Jack and H--- had to take off soon after we got back to my place, since he had an errand to do before driving back north. I won't get to see him next weekend. I'll be helping out at my new job -- we are exhibiting at an investors' conference. Jack's older daughter will probably be home again by that point and he'll be occupied getting her settled in. After that, things are up in the air. I hope it isn't too long until we get together -- I miss him! The benefit of these Reese's Bites candy: there's no unwrapping, but they taste like real Reese's Peanut Butter cups, unlike Reese's Pieces which lack chocolate. |
