End of Session
Tuesday, August 17, 1999
We had a fire drill at work this morning -- literally! Often these days folks say "We had a fire drill" and they mean that there was a crisis that had them running around fixing things on an emergency basis. In this case, I was at my desk when the strobes started flashing and the inappropriately calm voices started being broadcast, along with assorted beeps and whoops. "A fire as been detected in your area," said a radio-announcer man, cheerily. We were instructed to go down four flights of stairs, to a "safe area." But if that was the message on each of the floors at the top of the building, would we all be distributed on the lower floors, such that those on the 20th floor would be at the 16th, those on the 21st on the 17th? Seems odd! But I walked to a lower floor and hung out with strangers (I was the only one on my team who was in yet) until we got the all-clear. I was glad that they didn't make us walk all the way down and all the way up, seeing as how it was only a test. But I wonder if this is really a good way to handle a fire in a high-rise tower?
A year ago, it was the first night Jack was ever at my apartment, and our third date! I remember that night quite clearly -- Jack putting his arm around me as we sat watching the movie, the two of us walking hand-in-hand in my neighborhood. Jack told me quite a lot about his life before he met me, that evening.
I'm currently obsessed with the discussion groups on Yehoodi.com! (The site is about the NYC swingdance scene.) It's currently heating up there, with disputes, closed topics, people bounced from the site and masqueading under different names, spamming each topic with long lists of porn sites (since deleted). I feel the same fascination that I've felt in the past for various newsgroups. I do participate more here than in newsgroups where I've lurked. It's really the dance discussions that I like; seattle has a swing discussion list, but the traffic is very light -- I think some talk goes on in private lists that I'm not on *pout*.
Vicki Jean now has a Pita page! Talking of obsessions, I'm enjoying the weblog thing lately. Because I want to have links to cool or weird stuff that others don't already have, I'm doing more random surfing than I have in a long time. Searching on odd phrases is productive, too! I did have some trouble with the name of my pita page, but for right now it's Anita's LOL, as a variation on Anita's BOD. I'm updating there almost every day. Check it out!
Tonight was the last night of the dance classes I'm currently taking. I enjoyed them! I audited one on turns and spins to balance the class, but I think I benefitted from it! That's always been an area I need to work on. The Intro/Advanced class was also very worthwhile. I think the other class members got a lot out of both classes, also. One guy, who was a very awkward, uncomfortable lead before, is now in the tolerable range when he keeps calm. He should never have been in the Intro/Advanced class, though! After class, I drove to the Washington Dance Club. It's a problem getting from the Century Ballroom to WDC: I wouldn't drive to the Century in the ordinary course of things, and if I tried going home after class to get my car, I know I'd never go back out! We'll see how the schedule works out next session, and if I want to take class on Tuesdays still. There was a good crowd at the WDC, more folks than I expected. I met two visiting dancers from the Boston area, Melissa and Nancy. Joe Ross and I talked with them about all the good places in town to go dancing, so I'll bet I'll be seeing them again this week. I only stayed until quarter past eleven, but I was dancing for most of that time. I even was asked, then re-asked by several guys. Gratifying! One guy that I've been dancing with since Two-Tone Tuesdays time has come along well as a dancer. He led me in a relatively simple move, and expressed his happiness that I was able to follow it, complimenting me on my frame. I said thanks, of course, but suggested that the follows he's dancing with need training if they couldn't follow him. I don't think I put it in quite those words, but it seemed that his usual partners are only picking up free lessons here and there, and he's ready to meet some dancers that are a bit more serious about it, which would improve his own dancing, too! Does that make sense? |
