American Pie
Wednesday, August 18, 1999
It was late enough when I got done with work tonight, that I decided to go see a movie at the Bellevue Galleria again. And this time, American Pie fit the schedule! The theater was sprinkled with people, but not crowded at all. I was amused to see a large contingent of teens arrive just as the trailers started (in an R movie? shocking! ). Curiously, most of the trailers were for movies that have already opened: Deep Blue Sea, and so on. I really liked the movie! I wasn't wild about the bathroom humor, but I was pleased by how each of the four boys were distinct, but were believable as friends. Of the girls, the friend who gives Victoria advice is the most appealing (but what was her name?). Chris Klein, as "Oz", was gorgeous! I haven't seen Election, which he was apparently also in. He has a marvellously husky voice. The girl paired with him, Mena Suvari, had a very unusual face. She looked different from different angles; sometimes she seemed almost plain! In the old studio days, she would have had it in her contract to avoid being shot from those angles. She's apparently going to be in some high-profile movies coming out soon. Luckily, I'm not one that minds if I'm the only one laughing in a movie. There was general laughter at the broad slapstick scenes, but I was giggling, even chortling, at a lot of subtle points of social interaction. This isn't just a movie aimed at teenagers.
After the movie, I walked down to the Tower store on the first floor. The sign saying "Tower music, books and video" is what tempted me to do this, but the book area was teeny, compared to what I'm used to at Tower. This may be because there is a full-size Barnes and Noble half a block away. When I commented on this to the guy at the counter, on my way out, he said "We consider this just an appendage to the music store." Hummph! |
