Dorothy Dandridge

The mind of a bigot is like the pupil of the eye; the more light you pour on it, the more it will contract.

I did get the estimate on my car yesterday. I decided to have Jack's father execute the plan he'd come up with, where he'll go get the car and he and a friend of his will work on it.

So today I took the bus to work, which is probably what I'll be doing for the forseeable near-term future! It wasn't too bad, since the bus I take downtown and the bus to Bellevue both run often. But with no bus pass (I had to give mine back when I left Microsoft, sob!) I'll need to make sure I have correct change.

In my email at work, I saw that Chip, the company president, was proposing a hike this Thursday, as a team-building exercise. I was agreeable, but that meant I needed to go get some suitable shoes! I'd bought some up in Bellingham, but I'd brought the wrong box home with me that weekend, and had forgotten them on another occasion.

So after work, instead of going directly to the bus, I walked over to the sporting goods store that Kellie (our business manager) had pointed out to me from our high-rise window. I tried on many pairs of lightweight hikers; most weren't wide enough! If we (Dirk and I) sized up so the front part of my foot wasn't pinched, the heel was usually too loose.

Finally we found a pair that fit. I tried on a pair of womens' indoor soccer shoes because that's what some dance buddies wear for dancing, but decided to leave that for another day.

I was surprised that it was past the peak-fare time when I boarded the bus; I'd no idea that I'd been shopping for almost two hours! The bus picked up many folks along the way who didn't know what the fare was, or how to get on or off; this was because they were riding to the new stadium for the baseball game. Even though it was only my second time on that route, I amused myself by how I allowed myself to be resentful and irritated by how they were slowing us down. "Suburbanites!" I exclaimed under my breath. But they were really just nice families, not the horrid gits and nasty yuppies that are always disturbing the commmute for Nicholas Grinder.

I actually watched some TV tonight! On some swing mailing lists, there's been a lot of talk about a made-for-HBO movie about Dorothy Dandridge that stars Halle Berry. My interest wasn't in her, or in the star that the movie is about -- it was in Bill Elliott that did the big band music that was featured in the movie!

The story was a standard showbiz biopic, and Ms Dandridge did have a hard life, but the music was great! I want the CD, please!
