No More Highrise

We read advertisements...to discover and enlarge our desires. We are always ready -- even eager -- to discover, from the announcement of a new product, what we have all along wanted without really knowing it.

One year ago: Uncertainty

I made it to the Tuesday intersession dance last night, put on by the Savoy Swing Club. Carla had requested that I bring my camera, which gave me an extra incentive to actually get myself over to the Russian Center. When I got there, I took some pictures of the pre-dance lesson, then handed it over to her to use as she saw fit.

I wore the dress I bought on Sunday, with the mock-adidas stripes down the sides. A few people got the joke without prompting, and Denise, with whom I'd talked about this dress before, recognized it immediately.

I was amused when I asked one guy to dance, and he replied: "I don't do savoy!"

"Well, what do you dance?" I asked, thinking that perhaps he did the polka, or just East Coast Swing (which many folks start out with).

"I dance Hollywood," he replied. I suggested that perhaps we could dance successfully anyway, and we gave it a try with not-too-bad results. Afterwards, I did say that there were other follows present who are far more skilled in the H-side than I am, and I saw him dancing with various folks for the rest of the evening.

I had a grand time overall. It's been too long since I was out dancing with Earl, Brian, John, Chris, Anne, Mark, and so many more.

Jorn of Robot Wisdom decided to experiment with little mini-banners to promote other weblogs. All I needed to do was create the graphic, post it to this site, then send him the info, and voila, more traffic for Anita's LOL. What I mostly could tell from this experiment was how much traffic Robot Wisdom gets! My total hits for this site were up by about thirty percent, with only some spillover from traffic on this journal. Most of the increase was the loading and reloading of this small image!

Since then, Dave Winer has started rotating the same ads at his weblog monitor site.

At work, I ended today by recompiling our point and figure applet (a type of stock chart that uses Xs and Os to track the price movemments). We've implemented a few changes in default settings, and fixed a Y2K bug, thanks to our new Java guy M---. At least I handled the compiling and creating the jar file! So this new version should finally be posted tonight. Check it out!

All during the day I was packing up my office, since Monday is when we move to the new place, and I won't be back until Tuesday morning. The moving company had some very clever boxes -- no tape needed! The flaps just interlock naturally. As I was taking the stuff that I'll be moving personally down to my car, I recalled my first day, when I'd also made multiple trips up and down the elevator.

On the way home, I stopped at my sister's place. She'd already fed the kids and herself, but offered to make me scrambled eggs and toast. It's always nice to have someone cook for you! I got caught up on what they've all been up to. My nephews are very fond of Jeopardy these days, so we watched it as a special treat.

I've got my bags packed now. Jack and his daughter A---- will be here early in the morning to pick me up, then his daughter H--- in Olympia, then we'll drive down to his parent's place on the Klickitat river. A long drive, but Jack thinks we'll make it by dinner time. I wonder if he and I will be sleeping in the camper again? We had to last year because there was no room otherwise, with all the other folks there. It was tough on Jack's back, though.
