A Long Drive

Just as despair can come to one only from other human beings, hope, too, can be given to one only by other human beings.
-- Elie Wiesel

Wednesday, December 1, 1999

Hard to believe that I failed to write an entry on December 1, in 1998 or 1997! But that's the truth.

We had phone training today, on our new phone system. A brisk young woman came to walk us through all the features: voice mail, "do not disturb", our extensions. Chip wants to make sure the main line goes straight to voice mail, unless the caller knows which extension is wanted. This puzzled me at first, until I realized that he gets many more calls than I do! And now we'll actually be listed, so more likely to get sales people spamming us.

I tried driving home on 520 tonight, leaving around five thirty. It took an hour and a half! Not a good solution. When I got home, I had a craving for a pizza bagel from the Madison Market Community Co-op. I had one a few months ago and was very favorably impressed -- tomato and cheese baked on to the bagel, yum! So I walked over, bought a couple for my dinner, and inspected the place. It's only a few blocks from my house, but I had only visited once before. They are looking good!

Wally has been right in the thick of all the WTO stuff. I guess he feels impelled to witness this. I hope he can go back and do some writing on these journal pages that are all photos. It's good to give some context.

Jack wrote to tell me that he won't be around this weekend. He'd been hoping to get his daughter into an inpatient treatment program, and that came through more quickly than he thought it would. He'll be down in Olympia so she can see her mother, then he'll take her to Yakima. He has to stick around for the first few days, in case they decide not to take her, I guess. I'm disappointed that I won't get to see him, but he really needs to do this. I hope the program works for them!

I wanted something festive for this month's design, so I went hunting in my big clip-art archive of CD-ROMS. I hadn't tried using the Tiff files of clip art in Image Composer before, but they actually worked well! So I took the star and the angel and applied a dark metallic gold gradient to them. They ended up with a rubber stamp look, I think. I hunted for a suitable font, and decided on VictorianD. Coincidentally, Nicholas Grinder ended up with what looks like the same font for this month.
