Babe in the CityI'll take fifty percent efficiency to get one hundred percent loyalty. Friday, December 3, 1999
Tonight I left work around five thirty, and got home in the speedy time of forty minutes or so. How did I accomplish this? I drove down West Lake Sammamish Parkway, all the way to I-90. Chip had warned that it was likely to be backed up, but I found smooth sailing all the way. Even though this is more miles, I think it's the way to go in my homeward commute. I got home, parked, then walked up the street for a few slices of pizza for my dinner. I must remember to tell the pizza folks that I liked their former brand of pepperoni better! What they have now is ok, but what they had before, small, extra-spicy slices, was remarkably tasty! I had a few minutes before the dance I planned to go to, so I went into my place. I soon wished I hadn't! There were phone messages there from K---, my brother. We are sort of estranged, but he lives just a few blocks away, and calls every so often. His messages said he'd been caught up in a demonstration this afternoon on his way home from work, and he was wanting me to get him out of jail somehow. I talked to my sister M---- about it. She had talked directly to K----, didn't want to put up bail for him, and knew that that wouldn't be possible anyway until tomorrow. The demonstrators still protesting at the jail meant that no one would be processed, I think!
I gave Jack a call, to find out how he was doing. He'll be spending the weekend getting his daughter into an inpatient treatment center down in Yakima. He sounded so sad! He's just tired of it all. I felt sad for him, too. He was encouraging me to go to the dance, but by the time I hung up, I didn't feel like it. Instead, I went and curled up on the couch and watched tv. Babe in the City was on, which I hadn't ever seen. I liked it better than the original, in some ways. It's more baroque and stylized in how it looks, and a bit darker in tone. Babe the pig is more on his own. I liked the bigger role that Mrs. Hoggett, the farmer's wife, got to play. As in so many movies, I wasn't wild about the big action sequence at the end, with flying food, slapstick bits, and a balloon drop to end it. But the final denouement was suitably idyllic.
