Workplace Shock

Method goes far to prevent trouble in business: for it makes the task easy, hinders confusion, saves abundance of time, and instructs those that have business depending, both what to do and what to hope.

Two years ago: Breaking Barriers

I got a shock when I went into work this morning. After some problems, Chip had decided to part company with our java programmer, who just joined us last November! Chip had tried to contact me last night to talk about this decision, but he sent email only to my work account, and couldn't find my home phone number (and I'll admit that I don't often check my work email at night). I saw these messages in my inbox, then turned around and saw Chip and M---, arriving at almost the same time. A few very uncomfortable minutes followed, since Chip wanted to keep their communications documented and on email, while M--- still had some things to say. Yikes! After waving hello, I'll confess that I just hunkered down at my monitor. M---- left after a few exchanges.

This change will certainly involve some adjustments, but we'll adapt -- we always do! But I did feel bad for both parties.

Dave Kelly, who runs the ptypes weblog about various personality type theories, is trying to list weblog authors by their type, if they know it. So I admitted to being an INFJ, since I list it on my home page. Dave lists that type as "Sensitive," in the concordance he's created between some different systems.

I mentioned to him that I have to prefer the INFJ profile, though! Instead of "discomfort, fear of negative evaluation, and timidity," we have clarity of perception, vision and practicality, and idealism. The Keirsey profile compares this type to Gandhi and Eleanor Roosevelt -- who could resist such flattery?

Diane is considering adding a forum to her journal. I wrote to recommend the UBB system -- I've seen it work successfully both on very low-traffic sites, and high-traffic sites like The Straight Dope and Hissyfit. What makes it good? All posts in a topic being in one page is good for the web (fewer server hits) and promotes conversation, instead of splintering off.
