Amaryllis

When you take a flower in your hand and really look at it, it's your world for the moment. I want to give that world to someone else. Most people in the city rush around so, they have no time to look at a flower. I want them to see it whether they want to or not.

One year ago: Shakespeare in Love
Two years ago: Dance Challenges

Don't miss my Valentine's Day entry! I'm almost getting back to real-time here, which is what I want.

Two years ago, I was dancing with Joe Ross. This still makes me laugh: "He said when we were done, 'We showed them some new moves there!' which was a nice way of saying that we had combined steps in ways that had never been done before."

One year ago (plus a day) was the day that Jack and I really celebrated Valentine's day. "He was pleased and touched to get the candy, but seemed slightly uncomfortable, too. 'You didn't have to get me anything!' he exclaimed. He seemed to think that Valentines Day means that guys give flowers or candy to their sweethearts, but not the other way around! Finally I told him, 'Just say "Thank you very much,"' so he did." He still has the same attitude this year. Where does this come from? In Japan, girls give chocolate to boyfriends, relatives, and coworkers, with no reciprocity.

I've got a new series of dance classes to take next month. Theo Davis and Viola Spencer are teaching "Ultimate Improv for Lindy Hoppers" and "Savoy Meets Hollywood," on four Tuesdays starting February 29. The combination of thse two teachers should be interesting -- Theo is a young turk, up and coming in the Hollywood style, while Vi is a lindy pioneer with superb Jazz skills. Two areas I'd like to improve in, so this should be fun.

I didn't get out dancing any night this week. I think I might need to take class on Wednesday night, also. If I'm at home, it's so easy to not go out again. Tuesday I was really rather tired, after four hours of sleep in Tulalip. But Wednesday or Thursday, I should have gone!

AmaryllisThe amaryllis I planted at work is finally coming into bloom. The blossoms are a gorgeous, rich crimson, verging on red-red. The petals are slightly veined. The small crinkles make them look like Fortuny fabric; I'd love a dress made of such fabric, with gold bead ornaments standing in for the anthers. What richness! I do think amaryllis bulbs are one of the best things to grow indoors, on the impact vs. effort scale. They look spectacular and are really easy: plant, water, fertilize a few times during the year, then let them get dry when the leaves start to yellow. Then cut off the dried leaves, and start watering again when you want to kick off the process once more.

Jack stopped by at work, surprising me! I was glad I was there; I'd just gotten back from another eye appointment a few minutes before. He was on his way to Eastern Washington to attend Radcon, a science fiction convention. He needs to go to promote Vikingcon -- since he's on the committee for that one -- but this is a convention he's gone to before, so I know he'll have a good time. I'd have liked to go also, but with Potlatch next weekend, I didn't think it wise.

It must be gratifying to have someone jump up, run over, and hug you when you arrive somewhere! That's my impulse when I see Jack, so that's what I do. He sat down for a few minutes and drank an iced tea, but he couldn't stay long. He repeated several times, "I've got a lot of driving to do!"
