In deep sadness there is no place for sentimentality.

Two years ago: Solidarity

This still makes me laugh, as it did two years ago: "I remembered the joke in Gilbert and Sullivan's Pirates of Penzance that I never get tired of. It makes me laugh every time when Mabel sings (and Frederick with her in a duet) that she will be true to her vows, till she is wed, and even after! Noble girl!"

Jack and I woke up at a reasonable hour, considering the time change. The main agenda for the day was to once again walk up and down the neighborhoods where there was reason to believe his daughter A---- was spending her time these days.

This time we drove over to the University district first, and walked from one end to the other. No, we didn't see A----. I know that Jack doesn't really expect to! But he wants to make the effort, to reassure himself that he's tried everything.

We had an early dinner (or late lunch) at a Himalayan/Tibetan restaurant on the Ave. Neither of us had ever tried that kind of food before. It was really good, and not the same as other varieties of East Asian or Indian cuisines. I'd like to try it again sometime.

I think Jack was tiring by this time, and getting more depressed and sad. We drove over to Broadway and parked, then Jack suggested we sit in a coffeehouse with a good view of the street, and just watch the people. I pointed out Dilletante chocolates, which had tables next to the front of the store, and a street wall made of glass. We each had a coffe-based beverage, then the waitress (clever upseller that she was) suggested the "six truffles for six dollars" package deal. I went with her to the display case, and picked out six different chocolates, including a brandied cherry, and truffles with Cointreau, ginger, and other delicious flavors.

Jack watched intently out the window as we shared the candy. Intense flavors! But I want to remember that Jack doesn't really care for ginger and chocolate. (He got plenty of sweetness, and I ate that one piece, so it worked out ok.)

The candy, on top of a substantial meal, was too much! We should have resisted the combination deal, and just gotten one piece for each of use, I think! We were both feeling overfull, and tired, so we came back to my place and rested for a while. Jack had to drive north, though, so he couldn't hang around too long.

It's been over a year now since this crisis with Jack's daughter began. How difficult for him! All I can do is be supportive when possible.
