I still like what I wrote a year ago, about the social intricacies of breaking in to a dance social scene. "I know that I do have to consciously make an effort not to ascribe bad motivations to someone if I get turned down for a dance too often. ('He must not enjoy dancing with me!' 'Darn those <insert your group> snobs!') This can be more difficult if I'm feeling tired, or emotionally fragile in other areas."

I either didn't have time this morning, or couldn't find anything good enough, to post to my weblog. I'd been exchanging email about CSS intricacies with William "Man Out of Time" Dickson, so I knew it was fate when I saw this story about The Dao of the Web in A List Apart (an ezine aimed at web designers). I gave up on making my site look identical in Nav vs IE long ago. OK, I'll admit it -- I didn't mind if it looks worse in Nav, as long as it's readable. I was on the IE team, ya know! And boy did we go through a long period in early IE4 days, when we were bounced from websites by Useragent string alone! It was my job then to contact the website owners and ask them to change their policies, for their user's sakes. Puh-leeze!

Jack turned up at the office a bit later than he'd planned, but it wasn't that late. We had time for Chip to give his current demo of all the cool stuff now happening on the site. I suggested this because he does it so well! Almost every friend or site contributer who stops by the office gets the tour, so even though I've been keeping Jack up to date, I wanted him to get it from the souce.

After Chip and Jack had finished connecting geek to geek, Jack and I got on the road. It was a beautiful evening! But a long drive. We saw snow still on the ground at Snoqualmie Pass, then stopped for dinner at Ellensburg. We ate at a nice family dinner house called The Blue Grouse -- I liked my mesquite-marinated steak!

As we drove through Yakima, I idly asked Jack if he'd ever lived there. Turns out he did! For just a few months, after he got out of the service and before he went down to live near his parents' place. For all that he's lived in Washington state for most of his life, he's done a good deal of moving around.

We made good time -- Jack was zooming along at some points! I was a bit nervous when we were driving the one lane road that clings to the side of the Klickitat valley, coming down from Goldendale. Jack's totally familiar with the road, and he was crowding the nervous driver ahead of him, I think! But we made it without going over the side, or pushing the car ahead of us to do so. Everyone was asleep at his parents' place except Jack's daughter H----, so he gave her a hug, sent her off to bed, and we collapsed also.
