Polish Bride

I'm always amazed at the American practice of allowing one party to a homosexual act to remain passive -- it's so undemocratic. Sex must be mutual.

Ha! One year ago was the first time I mentioned weblogs in this journal. Of course, I did go ahead and create my own. Since then, everyone is doing it -- I think this phenomenon took off faster than journaling did! The creation of tools and sites to make it easy (blogger, Manila, Pitas.com) had a lot to do with the explosion.

Former journaler June "You Say Tomato" Thomas wrote me, bugging me to update my journal. I wasn't really bugged, of course! I'm glad to hear that someone wants an update. Fortunately, I've been keeping notes for entries each day, even though I haven't written them on that day. I pointed her to the secret online location for those notes, since what she was wanting was movie pointers. She said she'd been too busy to get to the film festival yet. but she wanted to be warned if there were any real stinkers she should stay away from.

  • The Polish Bride
(IMDB page for this film) Dutch production. A Polish woman on the run from some nasty folks who brought her to Holland under false pretenses takes refuge with a lonely Dutch farmer. Good acting, good production. The plot element about the farmer having trouble getting a loan from the bank seems to be unresolved. The female lead (Monique Hendrickx) is one of the plainer actresses I've seen as a leading lady, or perhaps she was costumed and made up to look that way. Her features were striking and strong, but her ears! I liked her, though. This certainly kept my attention.
  • But I'm a Cheerleader
(IMDB page for this movie) This was funny! Director Jamie Babbit based her story on the real gay rehab camps, along with her experiences growing up. (Her mother ran a drug rehad place.) A naive cheerleader is packed off to be set on the true path, when her parents and friends acuse her of being a lesbian. Guess what? she is! But didn't know it until then. The camp is stylized, with girls dressed only in pink, boys in blue. If the topic makes you uncomfortable, you won't enjoy this, but I laughed a lot. You won't recognize RuPaul.

I was saddened by the stories Babbit told at the after-screening Q and A, about what she had to cut just to get an R rating. (Those bits will turn up on the DVD, though.) Just think of all the explicit stuff in American Pie! But the ratings board are always freaked out by girls exploring their sexuality.

Jack called me tonight, which was nice! But he was feeling depressed, understandably so. In an ideal world, he'd be rafting this weekend, down at his parents' place (the trip we missed when his gall bladder attacked him a few weeks ago). But instead he'll be across the border in Surrey, Canada, attending V-con. I don't think he'll be spending the night there.
