One year ago: Show Me Love
Two years ago: Sleep Debt
Three years ago: The Earth is Our Country

A year ago, Jack had the movers coming to his house. This year he hasn't been feeling well. I wonder if next year the festival time will go more smoothly?

I was talking to him on the phone this morning. Things aren't going well! He and his daughter seem to be falling into the same patterns that were going on at the beginning of the year, and that's not good. He's in a fair amount of pain, too, and I'm worried about him! I don't think he's getting the nurturing he needs. When I hung up the phone tears were running down my face.

A---- had decided to go see two serious documentaries, one about Gandhi and one about the SDS. That didn't sound too great to me, so I went to two movies that he thought I would like. I'm not opposed to seeing serious movies, but I do have a limit. So I walked down the hill to go to the Harvard Exit.

  • Hola, ¿estás sola?
(IMDB page for this film) Spanish. A low-key comedy/drama about a young girl and her friend. They pick up a Russian(?) guy who speaks almost no Spanish. This had some funny parts, but was slow for me in spots. The usual problem with these shapeless stories -- no ending, and that's the case here. When the movie is long enough, the writer just gets the girls on a bus and sends them away.

I was waiting to take the bus downtown for my next movie, when Dan, a dance friend who is also attending the festival, offered me a ride. He was giving another woman a ride, too. We walked the few blocks and found his car. Dan was relieved, since he'd parked so close to the corner that he thought he might get a ticket or be towed. There was some confusion downtown due to all the oneway streets. Dan had mixed up which theaters I and the other woman were going to, and kept circling within a few blocks of the Pacific Place theater. I was perfectly willing to walk that short distance (and there was plenty of time), but I couldn't get Dan to stop!

I stopped into the Starbucks and treated myself to a Grande Venti Chocolate Brownie Frappucino. (I was still feeling teary and fragile.) I don't think brownies in a blended ice drink is really a good idea. It just ends up as crumbs that clog up the straw! Chocolate, yes. Baked goods, no. I managed to drink it anyway.

  • Manolito Four Eyes
(IMDB page for this film) Spanish. Another family comedy -- there seem to be a bunch of these at this year's festival. Manolito's father is a truck driver, and he finally gets to ride along on a trip. This reminded me of Jean Shepherd's the Christmas Story -- the narration adds a lot of humor (though it's the boy narrating, not an adult version).

I enjoyed the movies, but I didn't want to see any more today. I came home and spent a quiet evening, skipping both Vanguard and a birthday party for a dance friend. I have a strong urge to blow off the rest of the festival! I could drive up to Jack's place tomorrow and commute to work from Bellingham. But he discouraged this idea. He's not doing that badly, he says. My being there might even cause more problems with his daughter.

I feel as if I were a piece in a game of chess, when my opponent says of it: That piece cannot be moved.
