One year ago: Shagadelic
Two years ago: The Sugar Factory
Three years ago: Recharged For the New Millennium
This was another Cinerama night. Salami and crackers for dinner, yum! I sat in the row behind A---, Ray, and C---- and Y----. I threatened to kick the backs of their seats, but refrained.
- Kikujiro
(IMDB page for this film) Japanese. A young boy wants to visit his long-lost mother, and somehow the rough old husband of a neighbor is the only one who can take him. This was fun! No American movie would be paced like this one -- it continued with a whole other act after I thought it was ending, but I didn't dislike it for that at all. Good acting, and the kid blessedly non-cute. Takeshi Kitano was great as the shady, tough-guy older man. He also wrote and directed. The only drawback of this movie was the jingly theme song, which we all walked out humming or whistling, will or no.
- Raging Bull
(IMDB page for this film) I'd seen bits and pieces of this movie over the years, but I'd never watched it all the way through, so this opportunity to see it on the big screen wasn't to be missed. A--- was concerned that it would be too violent for me, but I was able to filter the worst parts through my fingers. Joe Pesci was violent and threatening -- the brother was the classic Joe Pesci role. Somehow Scorsese makes this thing work, even though I hate domestic violence stories and I'm not a boxing fan. The film has been acclaimed, with reason.
To make A---- laugh, I told him during the credits that I'd wished the school dance scene had included more (and more visible) swing dancing!

It's the boxers who attract the real women, after all, with their raw primeval strength, beautifully toned bodies and just a touch of vulnerability.
