One year ago: Mansfield Park
Two years ago: Wilde
Three years ago: Back to "Normal"
Chip was back in the office today. He said he'd learned about a lot of exciting stuff at Java One, which surprised me a bit. I figured that Pete (our Java dev) would have gotten a lot out of the conference, but I was under the impression that Chip was just there to escort Pete. I was wrong! Chip was very voluble about various Java server-side things that might become very useful for us.
Jack had decided on coming down to the convention. It worked out best that I should meet up with him there, but I didn't expect him till late. One disappointing thing -- the deciding factor for me when I bought our memberships was that Jon Singer was supposed to be at the con, and he didn't turn up.
There was a good crowd when I arrived at the hotel (the same one we were at last year), though I think the total membership didn't get as high as the first Foolscap. I chatted with Jerry Kauffman and Suzanne Tomkins, where upon they introduced me to Ginjer Buchanan. She's the chief editor for Ace Books for Science Fiction, but Suzle has known her for over thirty years, since college days.
The "opening ceremonies" for Foolscap are brief: a few short words from the committee members, and the guests of honor are introduced. Frederick Pohl was the other GOH. Then we all nibbled on fruit and dessert bars. Around eight o'clock, I decided to go out and get something to eat. I didn't feel up to organizing a group, so I just took off for the food court at the nearby mall, all by myself.

Just like bringing an umbrella will prevent the rain (cold and drizzly all weekend, by the way) and washing your car brings on the rain, me leaving the hotel precipitated Jack's arrival. I saw him in the lobby on my return. It was confusing seeing him, though, because of all the mirrors that line the pillars and hallways next to the main part of the lobby. I spotted him walking away from me, but he was really walking towards me!
It was so good to see him! I don't like missing weekends with Jack. His gall bladder wasn't bothering him too much at that moment. We went out again, to get him some food, then attended a program item back at the con. We also visited the hospitality suite for a while. It was getting late, we were tired, so we made it an early night. Jack drove to my house.
