Too BigLet me go to hell, that's all I ask, and go on cursing them there, and them look down and hear me, that might take some of the shine off their bliss. Tuesday, August 22, 2000 The big rack arrived today! This is the rack for our servers. Chip joked that Kellie and I weren't really interested in hardware like the males at our company, but I don't think that's true -- I just didn't want to get in the way as this huge object was uncrated. When there was some space in the server room, I walked back to take a peek. "Chip, are our servers going to fit in this? It doesn't look to me like it's deep enough." "It's fine!" he exclaimed. "Our servers are the standard depth. Besides, this was the only rack on the Dell website." "Hmmm," I hmmm'ed to myself, and went back to my desk. A few minutes later I heard, "Curse you, Anita Rowland!" which made me giggle. Sure enough, our servers are bigger back-to-front than will fit in the rack. So now Chip will have to navigate the Dell corporate structure to find out what sort of rack he should have ordered!
At our group meeting today (we have these so that Arthur Hill, our analyst based in London, can keep up with what's going on, among other reasons), I noticed that Pete had a scratch running vertically on his forehead. I didn't hear the details about it until he was giving me a ride home. He said he'd opened his own car door into his head, after a hike on Sunday! He'd been hiking alone (risky!) but the hike had been fine. But he was not paying attention at the finish, and whack! He went on to talk about another solo excursion, when he went into a cave by himself, sqeezing down a tight vertical shaft. "I could only go about a hundred feet into the cave after I got down there, because my rope was only two hundred feet long," he drawled. Think Gary Cooper when imagining Pete's style of talking. Pete normally (and kindly) drops me off right at my own place, but this time I'd asked him to take me to my sister's place in Madrona. He'd never been in that part of town before, so I pointed out the landmarks on the way, such as the Wonderbread outlet store. I'd originally thought that I'd be helping my sister M---- post a webpage for a charity benefit that my brother-in-law's band is playing at next week. But we ended up not doing that. We just had a fun dinner, chatting and laughing. My nephew B---- wanted to show me a fun kid's website he's been enjoying: mamamedia.com. I don't know why it's called that! But it did have some fun activities. Then we walked the few blocks to their local library branch, where I read a home-schooling magazine while M---- and B---- made their selections. They go every Tuesday, which I think is a good habit to be into. M---- gave me a ride home, shortly after that. |
