Balboa

A verbal art like poetry is reflective; it stops to think. Music is immediate, it goes on to become.

Three years ago: Mozart Out the Window

I got up early this morning -- at last I was going to get my knee chair back! I'd loaned it to my sister when she had a back problem a few months ago. Even though she'd turned out not to find it helpful, I had trouble getting it back without a vehicle (she mostly takes the bus to Pioneer Square), and another person in her office started using it. I was so eager that I was waiting outside the door before she arrived.

My big accomplishment -- I registered for SwingOut NorthWest! That's the dance camp I'll be going to at the end of the year. Today registration opened, I filled out the form online, and drove to the post office to make sure my check was postmarked today. Last time I was on the waiting list due to slacking. I had no idea that it would fill up as quickly as it did!

I got to drive the office to lunch. We ate at the Texas Bar-B-cue in Woodinville, at an outside table to take advantage of the last of the good weather. Chip approved of my car (but I don't think he could say anything else, could he?)

I hung around late at work, since tonight was the first night of this session of dance classes. I signed up for the one that the Savoy Swing club was running in Bellvue. Makes sense, because I'm already on the East side for work. Jonathan Garrigues and Loviça Callisti were teaching.

I was early (of course) so I wandered around outside, chatting with Karen and Steve Holt. Steve's the president of the club, and Karen works (more than full time, I think) as the administrator. I peeked at the class list, thinking that I would sign up for the second class of the evening, too, if there was room. Ha! I'd already registered for it last June, and forgotten about it.

I was annoyed that we had to wait for the step aerobics people to clear out. How rude of them to run late!

The first class was on musicality in dance. It's not that I need training in hearing musical form, though Jonathan is good on this, but the hints for expanding expressive range in my dancing are valuable. It's always a shock to dance with some of the inexperienced leads, but a good lesson in how to cope.

There was some question about whether the second class could happen, since there weren't very many people there for it. But we went ahead for the first session. Balboa -- I'm determined to make some progress on this dance! I've done workshop sessions, and started classes before, but I'm not beyond the beginning stages. After class I told Jeremy, whom I dance with often, that we should make a point of practicing when we see each other out social dancing. Balboa is a cool dance, very smooth, with tiny steps. It works for very fast music, which we get a fair amount of around here. The one thing to get used to -- it works best if you are close to your partner, since a lot of the leading is done by the leader leaning. (Say that three times fast!)
