Big Pink

I can't stand to sing the same song the same way two nights in succession, let alone two years or ten years. If you can, then it ain't music, it's close-order drill or exercise or yodeling or something, not music.

Don't miss the earlier entries in this batch, here and here, all you who only read the most recent.

In a rare-for-me posting to the Seattle Webgrrls mailing list, I pointed folks to TidBITS. This is a fine Mac-related weekly email newsletter, with associated discussion list and website. Are you using a Mac? You should be reading it. (I've read it because Geoff Duncan, whom I worked with in 1993, works there. I pointed to TidBITS because several people reported that they were going to be doing some work on a Mac, and were looking for resources, shareware sites, and the like.

Once again tonight I stayed on the east side after work, because I had dance class in Bellevue. This time, instead of going to MacDonalds in Kirkland for dinner on the way, I drove over to that strip mall near my work, where the MacDonald's Book Exchange is. I'd remembered to bring a bag of books that I'd already decided to get rid of. I turned them in, and wandered the stacks picking out some new-to-me books for myself. My goal was to walk out with fewer books than I came in with!

I was pleased that I found a Bujold novel -- I think there's just one that I don't have yet. Also, I picked a few select Regency romances. I need to start keeping a list of the authors I especially like (and dislike!). When I don't read an author for a while, it's very easy to forget whether she's good or not, and all the Signet Regencies look very much alike. My credit balance at this store is growing, since one must pay part cash for most transactions. I don't mind -- at least the books are out of the house!

A new restaurant had opened up in this strip, and I wanted to try it. They've got a small steam table of Chinese food which looked ok, but I really wanted to try the Pho. It wasn't bad! But I think the U-district place was better.

I drove over to the cute little Northwest Arts Center in Bellevue. This building should be called the Northwest Jazzercise Center. It irks me that the class using the room before us consistently goes over. They should be stopped! Instead, we just pout at the instructor. How lame of us.

The most bizarre thing -- this must be Halloween-related. At the front of the building, facing the street, was a two-story tall seated statue or figure. It looked like a big pink stuffed animal or something, with body, arms and legs of a pebbly pink texture. Oh, and it was wearing a grass skirt. But on its head was a creepy black skull mask! I don't know what this thing was doing there.

We had a few more folks for both classes than we did last week. When the classes are small to begin with, if a few folks don't make it, it makes a big difference!

I think the musicality class could really benefit from being longer -- the things we work on there take time to develop, and a weekly class is a regular reminder to keep trying things like "explore the vertical dimension". I do need more work in Balboa, but I've got the basic down, so the fact that there were only three weeks in this session just meant that we ran out of time for learning variations.

I'd take another class from Jonathan anytime, and of course Loviça is a longtime favorite of mine.

I still don't know what the procedure will be tomorrow, when I'm supposedly bringing H---- with me up to Jack's place. It would be great if we could arrange these things ahead of time, but it's not all under Jack's control.
