Make the Leap"I'm very brave generally," he went on in a low voice: "only today I happen to have a headache." Sunday, January 7, 2001 This afternoon we stayed around the house and did laundry. Jack and I also went up to Costco and Walmart. He's on a campaign to declutter and organize his house, which I think is a good thing, of course! I bought two small sets of wooden drawers for myself at Costco -- I plan to put rubber stamps and craft supplies in them. But A---- hadn't told us what time she needed to go to her NA meeting. We got back a bit late. She was waiting, and said she still wanted to go. So Jack drove, in my car. We thrashed around a bit until we found the place, a house next to a church. But when we actually got there, A----- dug in her heels and said she didn't want to go in! She didn't want to go in late. (She had supposedly gone to these meetings before at other locations, but Jack wonders if she actually went inside before.) Jack parked, and we just sat for a while. A---- was yelling and screaming ("I hate you! You are embarrassing me! I don't want to go in!"); Jack did a good job at keeping his cool. We weren't forcing her to go inside. It just seemed like a good idea to sit there; maybe she'd get something out of it! We did see people continuing to go inside, so we knew she wouldn't be the only one arriving late. In a tantrum, A---- got out of the car and stalked down the hill. We waited for a while to see if she'd just come around the block, but she didn't. Jack decided to drive downtown and see if we could find her. We spotted her near the downtown bus center, and she got into the car. Jack drove slowly back towards his place, but stopped off in Fairhaven and parked. I forget what he said, but he gave her another chance to go to the meeting, and she agreed! We drove back, dropped her off (and saw her walk inside the building), then went to a nearby restaurant and ate dinner.
The Pepper Sisters is a very nice southwestern cuisine restaurant. Jack and I were both pretty drained by this time, but I enjoyed the food. We picked A---- up and went for milkshakes on the way home. I guess her reluctance was like a horse refusing at the jump; now that she's made it over, I hope she'll go back. |
