![]() Car WashIt takes people a long time to learn the difference between talent and genius, especially ambitious young men and women. Tuesday, February 6, 2001
A bright sunny day today! I decided to make it my mission to get my car washed. It had been too long, and a black car does show the dirt. I needed cash, first. I thought I'd see a branch of my bank on the way to the car wash, but I must have imagined it being there. I pulled into a strip mall, and was surprised to see a new branch of Tuesday Morning there! This is a store that sells linens, gifts, home decor stuff, and random I-don't-know-what-all at discount prices. I really liked shopping there when I lived in Virginia, but the store didn't seem to exist here in the Northwest. That's one reason I was so excited when I'd found a branch in Portland, Oregon. They seemed to have just opened up today, and it was jam-packed inside. I did take the opportunity to cruise through, but I didn't buy anything (no cash!). I did find a cash machine at the grocery store, and bought some soda (we were out at work). A McDonald's combo meal next, but I should have told them not to supersize the drink -- it was too large for my cup holder! I wanted to have some food to eat while my car went through the car wash. I bought the fancy package at the Rose Hill Car Wash -- I wanted to have the interior taken care of, and the wheels scrubbed, and all that. It took longer, but the car looked super when they were done.
This all took so long that I decided to work a bit late to make up. I was the first to arrive and the last to leave! Traffic was heavy, so I went to the mall, bought candy (no dinner) and watched Finding Forrester. How difficult it is to portray genius writing in a movie. Wisely, Gus Van Sant only shows a few phrases from the young aspiring writer, and from Connery's famous writer. The young Robert Brown is admirable, very appealing. I liked Anna Paquin as his classmate, also. Note: spoiler I did think the story wrapped up too easily. What if Forrester had stayed around, had needed care from his young friend? Instead he rode conveniently off into the sunset, and handed Jamal a handy apartment to write in. |
