The Mummy Again

Get me a shot of bourbon, and a glass of bourbon, and a bourbon chaser.

Two years ago: Festival Eve
Four years ago: "It's Curtains!"

After a lazy morning Jack, H----, and I left Bellingham at eleven thirty for a two o'clock meeting in the U-district. That would be plenty of time, even for a slow driver like me (we were taking separate cars because I was going home at the end of the day), except for a planned stop at the Costco in Burlington.

We arrived at Costco at about the same time, but I bypassed Jack and H---- who were getting gas at the new Costco facility. This puzzled me, since I was sure they were ahead of me on the road. After I wandered around the aisles for a short time, we got together.

On of the reasons for the stop was to see if H---- could find any clothes to suit her here. She's choosy, though, and refused to even look! This is frustrating for Jack, I know. We did succeed in getting a plastic set of drawers for Jack to store stuff from his office. Lunch was pizza, polish sausages, and a chicken bake.

I took off before Jack and H----, since a last errand to the cash machine delayed them. I knew they'd catch up with me anyway. Sure enough, I was lapped before Everett, and H---- waved to me from the next lane over.

It was a bit difficult getting to the University Heights community center; I'd forgotten about some construction happening in that area. I was also nervous because my car was extremely low on gas! But I decided to park after I didn't see H--- waiting for me. I finally found them in a basement room, where the World Horror Convention committte meeting was just starting. They'd arrived a few minutes late, but Jack wasn't bothered.

Our plan was for me to take H---- downtown to do some shopping, then meet back after a second meeting for Vikingcon. I decided to drive back to my place, then we could take the bus downtown, then a different bus back to the U-district. The bus would be more interesting, and I wouldn't have to mess around with trying to park downtown.

We timed it just right! There was a bus coming down the block just after I parked. Our first stop was the Nordstrom Rack, but no go, H---- didn't find anything to please her. I didn't urge her to buy anything in particular, just made sure she was looking in the right section. I surveyed the plus-size department, plus the accessories, candles, and all that, but didn't see anything I wanted that much. We did see some strange objects in the shoe department! Nordstrom is known for their shoes. But again, H---- didn't see what she liked.

We walked down the hill and took a tour through the main part of the Pike Place Market, but nothing was bought. Then we doubled back to Ross Dress for Less. H---- had no success here, either. I was distressed to hear her complain about how no pants fit her, a perennial problem for some women. She's still in junior sizes.

On our bus trip back to the U-district, I was very impressed with the young man who was knitting in the seat in front of us (but I wasn't bold enough speak to him about it). I deduced that he'd knitted the sweater he was wearing by comparing it to the piece he was actually working on: sport-weight yarn, a fine gauge, and slightly fuzzy. The kind of knitting I actually like to do myself is based on having tons of color and texture, but I admired his technical skill. My opinion of him went way down when he lit a cigarette directly after getting off the bus, though.

The Vikingcon meeting was still going on when we arrived at the Cafe Roma. Jack is really feeling overwhelmed; I wouldn't chair a convention for all the tea in China! So H---- and I played a very old pinball machine while we waited. It was so old that it didn't have a multiplayer option! I actually won a few games after I got in the groove, so let H---- play off the credits.

Finally the meeting was declared done, so we walked up the block to Than Brothers pho. Once again there were folks that hadn't been there before, so we had the fun of explaining to them how it works ("No, it isn't spicy unless you make it spicy.") and what to get ("Be sure to get the French-style iced coffee!") It was a good meal, and I think everyone had a good meal. I do like that beef and rice noodle soup.

Jack dropped me off at my house on his way back north. Now was my chance to play with the Mummy DVD set that I'd bought at Costco this morning! I really do enjoy DVDs with all the extra audio tracks and behind-the-scenes stuff.

It had been a while since I saw this first one, so I watched the movie straight once. Then I turned on the audio commentary with director/screenwriter Stephen Sommers and editor Bob Ducsay. It was really fun hearing them discuss the movie and having the editor present gave Sommers somebody to bounce off of.

I stayed up way too late with this!
