Screenings

People care more about being thought to have taste than about being thought either good, clever or amiable.

Today was the first day for me to see screenings! Since I'm unemployed right now, naturally I should be taking advantage of my Full Series Pass and go the the screenings before the start of the Seattle International Film Festival. The weather was gorgeous! On the way down the hill, I zipped to the grocery store to get provisions, since there won't usually be time to go out for food between movies.

Dan Osborne and Anne came into to the dark hall after the first show, and peered up into the seats. "Is that -- Anita!?" We chatted for a few minutes. It was good to see them!

  • Divided We Fall
(IMDB page for this movie) Czech. I like the lead actor here, Bolek Polivka! This film was deep, characters well drawn. I was a bit dubious ahead of time, since it's about Czechs hiding their Jewish Czech neighbors (or not!) during WWII. I worried that it might be too tragic and depressing for me. It's a bit long! I liked the way some sequences are filmed, in a style that drops some frames. This conveys tension!
  • Liam
(IMDB page for this film) A young boy and his family in Liverpool after the war. The ending is weak (overdramatic), but I liked the cast. Is this based on a book? Times are hard when the shipyards close. Has that third-world effect; I wanted to shout at the family, "Get out now! Things won't improve for you!"
  • A Matter of Taste
(IMDB page for this film) French. A tycoon hires a somewhat aimless man as a taster, but soon wants to make him over to share more than just food sensations with him. Ending weak. I guess endings are the hardest things to get right!
