Faux Pas

Nothing more rapidly inclines a person to go into a monastery than reading a book on etiquette. There are so many trivial ways in which it is possible to commit some social sin.

My first faux pas as a pass holder attending screenings! I left during the first film of the day. Nothing terrible about the film, just not my type of movie. But other pass holders, when I returned later, informed me that pass holders have been barred for such behavior. Why? I'm still not clear on that. But in previous years, when someone stormed out or laughed nastily at the film, it resulted in all pass holders being excluded for the rest of that year's press screenings. So I guess they are still nervous about it all.

I walked from one end of Broadway to the other, buying a piroshky. I ate in the park by the community college. A very pleasant day! The second show of the day was a substitute.

  • Live Blood
(IMDB Page for this film) This was about a family in a rural italian town. The father sells vegetables in the market, but also smuggles and plays in a folk band. Lots of soap opera, with a violent ending that was unjustified.
  • 101 Reykjavik
(IMDB page for this film) A slacker living at home, but when his mother invites a female friend for the holidays... good local color, and I liked the humor. Passholders wondered ahead of time if Victoria Abril would have a nude scene -- she did!

I got a call from Jack -- he would be coming down tonight! This was a surprise, but fine with me. I did some picking up and getting things ready. I got a message from him shortly before eight. His back wasn't feeling so good after getting the car loaded, so he decided to stay in Bellingham until tomorrow. D'oh! Oh, well, I could understand this.

So I went to Victor's leave-taking party on my own, after all. Denys's house. I haven't been there recently; he's had the floors redone, and an old couch recovered. It looks good! We all sat on the porch and front steps, since it was such a lovely evening. I got Randy to show me the backyard plants he'd spoken of on the trufen list: bananas, and some exotic cannas another list member had given him. The plants are still very small. The iris beds were impressive, though!

Kate, Glenn, Denys and I sat together in the living room, and I told the story of the fire. They were suitably shocked and amazed!
