Birthday Dinner

At twenty you have many desires which hide the truth, but beyond forty there are only real and fragile truths -- your abilities and your failings.

I invited my sister M---- and her two boys to come over for dinner tonight, to celebrate her birthday. (My brother-in-law would have come, too, but he was out of town.) As a bonus, she brought her computer along, since it have barfed today with a bad electrical smell. Jack suspected a bad power supply.

The menu was baked potatoes, salad, and beef from the crockpot with red wine. I wanted to be sure there was enough, since the last time they came over there was unexpected shrinkage of a pork roast. Dessert was West Seattle themed: cake from Borracchini's bakery and ice cream from the Husky Deli.

It was a fun dinner, but they didn't stay late. My nephews wanted to be sure to get home in time to watch Enterprise on TV. After they left, we watched it tonight for the second time. Not so hot -- just not enough there in the episode. This was the one where one of the officers was implanted with an alien embryo -- but he wasn't really pregnant with it, by my definition. It was more like a wasp larva inside a caterpillar -- a parasite!
