MissingThe man who has ceased to fear has ceased to care. Wednesday, November 7, 2001
This afternoon Jack's daughter H---- had detention at school; apparently, she'd been late to a class one time last week. Interesting that she had the choice of serving "in-school" detention during lunch, or picking her day to stay after. She picked this day because she does after-school reading instruction on Tuesdays and Thursdays. So we weren't concerned when she didn't come home at the normal time. But soon it was far past the time when she should have been home, and we'd had no phone call, no nothing. We didn't even have a number to call to find out where she might be! We really need to find out phone numbers and last names for some of her new friends. Jack was very upset. He was understandably worried -- what if something had happened? -- plus this was very reminiscent of his older daughter's behavior, before she took off and stopped coming home at all. He's determined not to go through that again. Around seven o'clock, he called the police and reported her missing. We figured she wasn't actually running away, since all her stuff was still here. But what if she'd been in an accident, gotten in someone's car....
H---- showed up around eight o'clock. For a few minutes, she put up a front: "Huh? What are you mad about?" Jack just went off! "Go downstairs and pack your bags!" Finally after some talk, the story came out. She'd gone and hung out with some friends after her detention, wandering around a park. Why hadn't she called? "I don't know." More discussion followed. Seems like a bone-headed stunt to me! Jack asked her to write a page about what she'd done, why it was a bad idea, and how she could not screw up in the same way in the future, before she went to bed. "I'm so tired!" So things have settled down, and H--- will be at her mom's this weekend as scheduled. But if this happens again, it would be very serious. Man, being a parent is a tough job. |
